I cannot find anything in the final chapter that suggests that this is the case. It seemed to me that the runt and bristle were leaving together before Peter then told Pax to go with them.

The book opens as Peter leaves Pax in the woods. Pax doesn't understand. The boy's anxiety surprised the fox. The few times they had traveled in the car before, the boy had been calm or even excited.

The fox nudged his muzzle into the glove's webbing, although he hated the leather smell. His boy always laughed when he did this. Pax, the eponymous fox of Sara Pennypacker’s new novel, is built on the model of Hughes’s cub, half wild and half domesticated, a galvanic presence fit.

The heartbreak occurs early in Pax by Sara Pennypacker. In chapter one, Peter is made to abandon his pet fox, the book’s titular character, at the edge of a wood.

The method employed to distract and leave Pax behind is shockingly cruel, even more so because it is so familiar. However, we learn that this is not a matter of human whim and fancy. Paxis is an easy access fishing backpack designed for the ultimate convenience.
